Soft pastel

A statistics exam, tteokbokki on the curb, the Han at sunset and the summer's first firefly. One paragraph in, one page out.

Tuesday, June 23, 2026

9:00 statistics exam, I blanked on the last proof, then it came with 6 minutes left and I ran out shaking.

At the stall by the gate I bought 4,000 won tteokbokki and ate on the curb with Jiwoo, we laughed until it hurt and the ajumma gave us extra fish cake ㅋㅋ, then at 4:00 I tutored Bomi, she finally got factoring and did her dance.

I biked beside the Han at sunset, the river orange like melted candy, everyone picnicking on the grass, studied in the library until 11:00, then walked home through the alley and saw the summer's first firefly, I made a wish like a child.

Impressionist light

A swordfish argument at the market, ninety covers at lunch, ravioli with his daughter and a midnight swim. His whole Saturday, in the light of the bay.

Saturday, July 11, 2026

Mercato at six, Gennaro and I argued over the swordfish and I lost happily because it was perfect, perfect.

Lunch came like a storm, 90 covers in the heat, then the new boy dropped a tray and I told him about the night I dropped a whole ragu. At four I took the espresso in the alley doorway, the best ten minutes of any day. After close I taught Sofia to fold ravioli, she left little flour handprints on my jacket and I will not wash it. At midnight I swam off the rocks with Paolo, the bay warm as soup, the city lights shaking on the water. I went to bed with my shoulders finished, smelling of salt and basil.

Painted in Impressionist light. Six scenes and a few objects the writer named: the espresso cup, the basil. Nothing he did not write.

Ukiyo-e woodblock

A four a.m. feed, a release shipped, the pediatrician, warm evening rain on the terrace. The first day she did not cry from tiredness, kept.

Monday, March 9, 2026

Aanya woke at 4 for her feed. We watched the street lamps go out together.

later: 9:30 standup. The team shipped the release and I made a fool of myself cheering on the call. Pediatrician at noon, 70th percentile, and Aanya smiled at the doctor throughout. Amma sent laddoos with the driver. Sudden warm rain in the evening. I walked the terrace with A under the awning, smelling wet earth. Rohan cooked dal and rice while I dozed on the sofa, then I ate. First full day I did not cry from tiredness. Small victories.

Chalk on slate

A winter swim with the Tuesday club, cardamom bread, two hours at the library, and the aurora over the fjord. A full day at sixty-two, in chalk.

Wednesday, January 14, 2026

At seven the tirsdagsklubben swam at Katten, all five of us shrieking like girls in the black and burning cold. Warm rolls at Astrid's. I called little Emil for his birthday and he showed me his lost tooth through the phone! Cardamom bread baked all afternoon and the flat smelled like my mother's kitchen. I volunteered my two hours at Deichman, helping a young man find plumbing books. After dinner I walked alone to the point. Green aurora crossed the clear sky above the fjord until my toes went numb.

Every evening

A week of Hana, page by page.

Seven days in a row from one diarist, in her own words and her own hand, each painted in Soft pastel the night she wrote it. Some days are three lines, some are a paragraph; every one gets its page.

Hana's page for Wednesday, September 9

Wednesday, September 9

Lectures finally found their ordinary rhythm, Jiwoo and I split one ₩4,500 bibimbap at 12:30 and were hungry again by three, then compared course notes on the upper floor of Central Library until 11:00, pushing our glasses and papers back into place whenever someone opened the window.

We walked home together as far as the Main Gate, and the stationery shop doorway breathed out warm paper and ink into the alley.

Hana's page for Thursday, September 10

Thursday, September 10

Ate a ₩1,600 triangle kimbap between lectures, caught the bus along Anam-ro with my textbooks crushing my knees, then Bomi arrived at 4:00 holding up her mathematics quiz, 92! Hyejin eonni found three custard cakes in her cardigan pockets and we ate them over the next worksheet, Bomi got crumbs on the rabbit charm and laughed ㅋㅋ.

Lee Minseok's keys rang through the cold white corridor at closing, I studied at the library until 10:40, then walked home through the alley while red shop letters trembled in the bus windows.

Hana's page for Friday, September 11

Friday, September 11

Jiwoo waited under the Main Gate clock with her green tote and exchange essay, we spent the afternoon in Central Library moving one paragraph around until every sentence looked guilty, then escaped to Anam Cup Tteokbokki and paid ₩5,000 each, the ajumma added one extra fish cake and the pepper made my lips burn all the way home through the alley.

At the studio we bought canned grape drinks for ₩1,500, opened the laptop beneath the little kitchenette light and edited the essay again, Jiwoo saved the revised version but did not submit it, and I did not ask when she would. We read the new Friday webtoon afterward and ate the last rice cake cold from the pan, outside the apartment windows made a huge glowing grid, like the city had opened a notebook just for us, and for a minute I stared like a child. The room felt very small after she left, but also full of her loud laugh.

Hana's page for Saturday, September 12

Saturday, September 12

Tutored from 10:00 to 1:00, Bomi started the next unit more bravely than I did, then I ate a ₩3,000 kimbap and stopped at the Central Library return slot before Anam Fresh Mart. Rice, eggs, cucumber, fruit and noodles came to ₩27,800, my arms knew every won by the walk back.

I wheeled the silver bike to the campus repair booth because the rear brake screamed at each corner, cable and pads would be ₩38,000 ㅠㅠ. Brought it home unrepaired, did laundry, and watched shirts flap above the tiled roofs like small surrender flags.

Hana's page for Sunday, September 13

Sunday, September 13

Kimchi fried rice and egg, about ₩2,300.
No library, just assignments, then walked home through the buzzing alley.
8:00 call. Mum sounded tired, Dad asked about tutoring.
Balance: ₩184,000.

Hana's page for Monday, September 14

Monday, September 14

Ate ₩4,000 soy sauce noodles on campus, then carried the secondhand laptop to a Central Library carrel and checked the transcript one more time, the A- was still there, solid and real. I uploaded the remaining scholarship documents at 8:17, pressed submit with both hands shaking, and took a photo of the confirmation because apparently I trust nothing.

The library windows had turned black around all the white desk lamps by 11:00, I walked home through the narrow alley with my backpack suddenly lighter, though every book was still inside.

Hana's page for Tuesday, September 15

Tuesday, September 15

9 lecture.
4 Bomi, next unit, Mrs. Oh kept my regular hours.
₩3,500 kimbap. Library till 11.
Walked the bus-lit alley home, shoulders sore. Finally.

Three small steps, once a day

A diary that paints back.

Nothing has to be well written. It is a diary, not an essay. A sentence is enough; a paragraph gives the painter more to work with. Type it, or just say it.

1

Write

Type it or say it out loud. Where you went, who you saw, what the sky did. Three lines or three pages, as much as you like. Mestoria reads only what you wrote.

Takes as long as you like
2

Breathe

While the page is painted you get a short breathing moment. About a minute. Most people say it is the best part of the day.

About a minute
3

Keep

The finished page lands in your journal beside your words, dated and signed. Days become a book you will actually open again.

Yours to export, always

Rather talk than type? Say your day out loud on the walk home. Mestoria writes it down as you said it, and paints from that.

Likeness

It is you on the page.

Add a photo of yourself once. From then on, every page has you in it. Your hair, your skin as it is, your glasses if you wear them. Not a look-alike. You.

  • Clothes change with the day. The person does not.
  • Rather not add a photo? Describe yourself in a line, and it paints you from that.
  • Your photo is used only to paint your pages. One tap removes it.

Days become a book

A year, side by side.

Twelve pages from twelve diarists laid out together, January to December. Your own book grows a page a night. Keep one style all year and the book reads as one; change styles as you go and every month has its own weather.

Why people keep going

Ordinary days, worth opening again.

I am not a writer. Three lines about a blocked gutter and a lost lunch box, and the page came back looking like a good day. It was.

Questions

Before you begin.

Who can see my diary?

You. Your writing is stored for you alone and is never shown to anyone else, never used to train anything, and never sold. The painter sees one entry at a time, only to paint it.

What happens to my photos?

They are used to paint your pages and for nothing else. Nobody sees them, they are never shared or sold, and one tap in Settings removes them from our server. Photos that sit unused are removed on a schedule anyway.

Do I have to be in the pictures?

No. Skip the photos and describe yourself in a line, or let the pages be about the day rather than the person. You can add photos later.

How long does a page take?

About a minute. You get a short breathing moment while it paints, and the finished page arrives beside your words.

Can I change the style later?

Any day, on any page. Repaint yesterday in chalk, keep the rest in pastel. Your written entry never changes.

Can I speak my entry instead of typing it?

Yes. Tap the microphone and talk. Mestoria writes down what you said, you can fix a word or two, and the page is painted from that.

If I subscribe here, does it work in the app?

Yes. One account, one journal. Sign in with the same email in the app and every page is there, whether you subscribed here or in a store.

What if I cancel?

Cancel any time, from your account page here or from the store you subscribed in. The pages you painted stay in your journal and can be exported one at a time or as a whole book.
